Having a selection of M*A*S*H books as part of the collection is vital since the series itself began as a novel by Richard Hooker. All 15 of the M*A*S*H novels are part of the collection, and so are books about the series. Many dedicated fans have written FAQ and fact books, and those are well represented. As are books by members of the series cast and crew since they offer an inside story of how the series was created.
The final group of books presented in the collection are related to real MASH units in Korea. As a historian, I appreciate how the creators of the series used the stories provided by nurses and doctors from real MASH units and integrated them into the series. This is a big part of what made the characters and series feel real. The collection features books by, and about, real doctors, nurses, medics, and helicopter pilots during the Korean War. These books have led me to appreciate the attention to detail and respect the series creators paid to the real doctors, nurses, and wounded soldiers who experienced a MASH unit.
The books in the collection are arranged into four categories, and they are in each category alphabetically by the last name of the author. Each title is cited using The Chicago Manual of Style (since that is what we historians use!). The monthly From the M*A*S*H Library posts will feature a review of one of the books from the collection. Once a book has been reviewed, the title of the book will be hyperlinked to the review.
