Since we are now in the depths of January and it has been pretty cold, I decided to pull out a cold weather episode for this week’s post. There are several to choose from, but I was really excited when I saw that I had a script for “The Longjohn Flap” (01×19) and it hasContinue reading “Script Spotlight 16: “The Longjohn Flap””

Script Spotlight 15: “‘Twas the Day After Christmas”
Since today is the day after Christmas, known as Boxing Day in some parts of the world, there was only one episode that made sense for this week’s post: “‘Twas the Day After Christmas” (10×09). In this episode, the camp celebrates Boxing Day by having the officers and enlisted personnel switch jobs. The results areContinue reading “Script Spotlight 15: “‘Twas the Day After Christmas””
Script Spotlight 14: “The Yalu Brick Road”
Happy Thanksgiving! It is Thanksgiving day in the United States, and it seemed fitting to look at the script for the episode “The Yalu Brick Road” (08×10) since it takes place the day after Thanksgiving. This is the only episode of M*A*S*H to feature Thanksgiving, but it is a classic in that it has aContinue reading “Script Spotlight 14: “The Yalu Brick Road””
Script Spotlight 13: “Trick or Treatment”
Since today is Halloween, there was only one choice for this week’s Script Spotlight post: “Trick or Treatment” (11×02). This episode is from season 11, and is the only episode of M*A*S*H was a Halloween theme. We see several characters dressed up including Hawkeye as Superman, BJ as a clown, and Col. Potter as aContinue reading “Script Spotlight 13: “Trick or Treatment””
Script Spotlight 12: “Pilot Episode”
This Saturday, September 17, marks the 50th anniversary of the premiere of M*A*S*H on CBS. There are several events and marathons planned this week to mark the occasion, but I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate the pilot episode by looking the script for the M*A*S*H “Pilot Episode” (01×01). The pilot is an iconicContinue reading “Script Spotlight 12: “Pilot Episode””
M*A*S*H-ish 3: Trapper John, M.D. Script
M*A*S*H spawned two spin-off series after the show ended in 1983. AfterMASH starred Harry Morgan, Jamie Farr, and William Christopher and began the following fall. A series starring Gary Burghoff as Radar was also attempted. That series, W*A*L*T*E*R, never made it past the pilot episode. AfterMASH ran for two seasons before being cancelled. Neither spin-offContinue reading “M*A*S*H-ish 3: Trapper John, M.D. Script”
Script Spotlight 11: “Henry in Love”
Early scripts from M*A*S*H are pretty hard to find, especially season one. In season two, the series began to hit its stride, and with Larry Gelbart firmly at the helm, the show seemed to start over from season two, episode one. They started to write episodes that didn’t just focus on Hawkeye and the doctorsContinue reading “Script Spotlight 11: “Henry in Love””
Script Spotlight 10: “No Sweat”
The heat here in the midwestern United States has been insane the last few weeks, but we know from M*A*S*H that it doesn’t compare to the heat experienced in Korea during the war. This week, let’s review a script from an episode where the M*A*S*H crew are doing all they can to keep busy duringContinue reading “Script Spotlight 10: “No Sweat””
Script Spotlight 9: “Cowboy”
The first season of M*A*S*H was hit or miss when it came to quality of storyline. The series creators were defining characters and finding their way, which was no easy task since the feature film had taken much of the source material from the novel. There are some bright spots from first season, however. “SometimesContinue reading “Script Spotlight 9: “Cowboy””
Script Spotlight 8: “Dear Dad…Three”
Throughout its run, M*A*S*H tackled a number of social topics in addition to war and death. The series had storylines that challenged homophobia, sexism, and racism. In its second season, M*A*S*H was paired up All in the Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, and The Carol Burnett Show, shows that areContinue reading “Script Spotlight 8: “Dear Dad…Three””
